Being chosen to speak at this event was an honor and an exciting opportunity. SXSW includes a lot of educational panels and we were excited to share our green building material option to a wider audience. Education is a huge part in establishing a new building option to the mass market.

How well does it insulate?

Hempcrete has an amazing ability to insulate because it has a high thermal mass. It regulates temperature just like normal insulation, but it also absorbs and stores heat energy, while releasing it over a long period of time. This protects against temperature fluctuations. It has an R-value of 2.2 per inch with a thermal mass.

Benefits for you

Modern humans spend a majority of their time in their homes, so our environment is constantly affecting our health. Choosing materials in our home that don’t contribute to the toxins we are constantly exposed to can make a huge difference in your daily life. This material also helps to maintain a healthy humidity within the home, which allows the body to fight off sickness. Because of the lime component in hempcrete, viruses don’t survive on surfaces long, further protecting your family.

Benefits for the home

Hempcrete is designed differently than your standard home construction. Instead of breaking up the insulation at every stud, the insulation covers the studs, creating a monolithic wall. This provides more support, removes thermal bridging, and the lime petrifies the frame to further protect the skeleton of your home, repelling bugs and other pests. This not only makes your home more efficient, but also extends its life.

Benefits for the Earth

Hemp is carbon sequestering, so it pulls carbon out of the atmosphere as it grows. Hempcrete is made of natural components so it can be returned to the earth, keeping it out of landfills. As a bonus, it’s a good crop to rotate into fields to add nutrients back into the soil, and helps prevent weeds from growing into the next round of crops. The growth of the plant is also used for remediation in farmlands and soils that have been poisoned.

Consultations & Inquiries

If you have questions about a workshop or you are looking for more information on a build that you would like to pursue we offer an initial consultation of half an hour. Continued consultation is $60 per hour.  We can guide you on your journey to building your own structure, help you design,  and even educate other trades for the build process.

Workshops

We offer workshops once or twice a year, providing opportunities to learn the application of building and installing hempcrete. Our workshops focus on understanding modifications required for hempcrete build, mixing proportions, proper application technique, and answering questions about personal projects. Theres no better way to learn than hands on!
